Jean-Claude MANUGUERRA

Research Director at Institut Pasteur (Paris)

Jean-Claude heads a Research Unit focused on Environment and Infectious risks, which hosts a Laboratory dedicated to the Urgent Response to Biological Threats (CIBU) and the National Reference Centre for hantaviruses at Institut Pasteur. He is the focal point of the World Organization for Animal Health for the Detection and Identification of Emerging Animal Pathogens in Humans and the Development of Diagnostic Tools.

Initially qualified as a veterinarian, he then went on to obtain a PhD in virology at the Institut Pasteur, completing his post doctoral at the UK National Institute for Medical Research in London.

Prior to his current role he worked as co-director of the National Influenza Centre for North France (1994-2003), one of the 13 laboratories of the WHO Laboratory Network on SARS-1 and for which he went to Hanoi for the control of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-1) outbreak in 2003. He has also participated in a number of other field missions: Cambodia (2004) for avian influenza, Sri Lanka (2005) following the Tsunami, Mexico (2009) for pandemic A(H1N1) influenza, Saudi Arabia (2013) for the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome and more recently Guinea - Conakry (2014) and Macenta (2015) for Ebola.

From 2000 to 2018, he was a member of the steering committee of the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network and was in postion of chairman June 2012 to December 2013.

At the outset of the worlds largest outbreak of the Ebola Virus, Jean-Claude was sent to the main hospital in the Guinean capital Conakry in April 2014, and then subsequently to the French Red Cross Ebola Treatment Centre in Macenta in January / February 2015.

In the first days of January 2005, Jean-Claude went to Colombo and travelled widely across Sri Lanka to assess the potential impact of the tsunami on future outbreaks of infectious diseases.

The 12th March 2003, the World Health Organisation launched a world health alert on SARS-1 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrom) after developments at the French Hospital in Hanoi. Together with a team of French doctors and nurses, Jean-Claude arrived on the 15th of March to assist in the investigations and virus detection.
